What's In My Bag With Sseko

At the beginning of this year I shared in an instagram story that our family would only be working and collaboration with brands and businesses that we really stand behind. That being said, a month ago an email popped in my inbox from a local friend here in Fort Worth. She wanted to share with me her business and the difference that it’s making in women’s lives. It’s called Sseko, it’s a socially conscious fashion brand. What does socially conscious mean? Don’t worry, I had to learn this too… it means Sseko treats business as a way to bring social justice into the world. Here’s a bit of their story, their founder, Liz, booked a one way ticket to Uganda and met 3 young ladies who were seniors with big dreams and a ton of talent. Unfortunately, Uganda is still very patriarchal. The cultural norm is that women can’t do things like men can. So it’s really hard for women to get jobs and go on to college! There’s a 9 month break between high school and college, so students can save. Liz’s friends didn’t know how they would find work, so Liz created the ribbon sandal to create opportunity to send them to college. She promised Mercy, Mary and Rebecca that if they made these sandals with her, she would send them to university.

Sseko was started to enable high potential, talented young women in Uganda to continue on to university. These young women work for Sseko in the nine-month gap between secondary school and university, saving part of their income for university. They receive life skills training, are paired with professional mentors and get valuable formal work experience. At the end of their term, Sseko matches their savings 300%. Every woman who has graduated from Sseko has gone on to pursue higher education and is on her way to making our world a more beautiful place.

What an amazing difference Sseko is making in these women’s lives! And in connecting with Michelle, I am doing my small part to share their beautiful products with y’all! I was gifted this gorgeous folding woven crossbody bag is the perfect piece for me (when I am not carrying my diaper bag). I am honored that this piece was hand woven and created by someone working hard to create a better future for herself. And I feel blessed to spread the word about Sseko! Below you can find more hand crafted leather goods, printed textiles, and other hand woven goods from Sseko!
